🚨 Great News! The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu Reopens This April 1st 🎉
After weeks of closure due to heavy rains and natural events, the legendary Inca Trail will finally reopen on April 1st, 2025! 🌿🏔️ This decision follows thorough technical evaluations, maintenance, and rehabilitation efforts by the Ministry of Culture, SERNANP, the Cusco Regional Government, the Machu Picchu District Municipality, and private sector partners.
However, this reopening comes with important safety conditions to protect hikers, guides, and staff.
🛑 Please take note of these key updates:
⚠️ Trail Conditions & Adjustments
🥾 Routes 01, 02 & 03 (Starting from Km 82, Km 88 & Salkantay)
✅ Continuous Movement Recommended: In the Tarayoc-Hatunchaca section, hikers should keep moving to avoid impacting unstable terrain, especially during bad weather.
✅ New Detour After Wayllabamba: About 1 km past the Wayllabamba campsite, a 300-meter detour has been established above the traditional trail.
✅ Alternative Route at Caracol Sector: Due to landslides, from Phuyupatamarka onward, hikers must take the old trail via Qantupata, Torrepata, Intipata, and Wiñaywayna.
✅ No Camping at Wiñaywayna: This site is temporarily closed for overnight stays and will only be a checkpoint. Groups originally camping here will be relocated to Phuyupatamarka.
✅ Direct Route for Some Camps: Groups staying at Ayapata or Chaquiqocha camps must continue directly to Machu Picchu, skipping Wiñaywayna.
✅ "50 Steps" Section Advisory: Similar to Tarayoc-Hatunchaca, hikers should move continuously to prevent further erosion.
🚶♂️ Route 05 (Starting from Km 104 – Chachabamba)
⚠️ The direct path between Chachabamba and Wiñaywayna is temporarily closed. Instead:
✅ Take the Reopened Route to Choquesuysuy, then ascend to Wiñaywayna and continue to Intipunku.
🔧 Ongoing Maintenance & Full Restoration Plans
🛠️ Restoration and conservation work will continue across the Inca Trail. By July 2025, all routes are expected to be fully rehabilitated—as long as weather conditions improve.
📢 Tour operators must strictly follow all regulations, and licensed guides will play a key role in ensuring compliance. Any necessary updates to routes will be announced promptly.
