Vinicunca didn't show up on postcards until about 10 years ago. The ice that used to cover it only melted back recently. We can build time for it into our custom itineraries when the season and your pace allow.

Before any alpaca wool gets dyed, it is washed – using saqta, a natural root that lathers like soap and has been used as “Incan shampoo” for generations.

Then comes the color: cochineal (a tiny parasite that lives on cactus) for deep reds, maíz morado for purples, and a whole table of other natural materials for everything in between.

All of it – washing, dying, spinning, weaving – is still done entirely by hand in Chinchero, Peru.

This is exactly what we mean when we say “immersive.” 🫧 🧶
