Humantay Lake is one of Peru’s most stunning turquoise lakes, located high in the Andes Mountains at the base of the majestic Humantay Mountain. Fed by glacial meltwater from the snow-capped peaks, the lake shines with an intense blue-green color that changes with the sunlight and weather.
The hike to Humantay Lake is part of the famous Salkantay Trek route and takes visitors through breathtaking mountain scenery, valleys, and traditional Andean landscapes. Sitting at about 4,200 meters (13,780 feet) above sea level, it’s both a natural wonder and a sacred place in Andean culture.
Many travelers visit Humantay Lake to experience the peaceful atmosphere, connect with nature, and witness one of the most photogenic spots in Peru.

Machu Picchu is a 15th-century Inca citadel high in the Andes Mountains of Peru. Built around 2,430 meters (7,970 feet) above sea level, it sits on a mountain ridge above the Urubamba Valley and is considered one of the most extraordinary archaeological sites in the world.
Why it’s famous
It’s one of the best-preserved remnants of the Inca Empire.
The city blends sophisticated stone architecture with dramatic mountain scenery.
It remained largely unknown to the outside world until American explorer Hiram Bingham brought international attention to it in 1911.

How the Incas built it
The Incas used precisely cut stones that fit together so tightly that even a knife blade can barely slip between them. This technique helped the structures survive earthquakes common in the region.

Salkantay is one of the most sacred and powerful mountains of the Andes, rising to about 6,271 meters (20,574 ft). The name “Salkantay” comes from Quechua and is often translated as “Savage Mountain” or “Wild Mountain.” For the Incas, it was an Apu — a spiritual mountain protector.

The famous Salkantay High Pass is the toughest and most epic part of the trek. On Day 2, hikers climb to around 4,630 meters (15,190 ft), surrounded by glaciers, rocky valleys, and freezing winds. This section is known for testing endurance because of the altitude, steep ascent, and dramatic weather changes. Many travelers call it the “Gringo Killer” because it’s the hardest day of the trek — but also the most rewarding.
At the top of the pass, you get incredible panoramic views of snow-capped peaks, clouds moving through the Andes, and the massive presence of Salkantay Mountain itself. It feels like standing between earth and sky.

Day 1 of the Inka Jungle Trek is all about adrenaline, epic landscapes, and a huge change in ecosystems—starting in the cold Andes and ending in the warm jungle 🌿
⛰️ Early Morning: Cusco → Abra Málaga
You leave early from Cusco (around 6:00 am) by van.
After ~3–4 hours, you reach Abra Málaga Pass (around 4,300 m / 14,100 ft). This is where the biking begins.
🚴‍♂️ Downhill Biking Adventure
This is the highlight of the day:
Mostly downhill ride (50–60 km approx.)
Start in cold, windy mountains → ride into cloud forest and jungle
Pass waterfalls, small villages, and lush vegetation
Fully guided with helmets, gloves, and support vehicle
It’s not super technical, but you need basic control and confidence on a bike.
