Last week we had the real pleasure of welcoming John to run with us here in Cusco.

We started with a local trail run around the hills and paths surrounding the city, before heading out to explore the incredible Lares route — one of our absolute favourite runs in the Andes.

High mountain passes, remote communities, crystal lakes, endless llamas & alpacas, and some truly breathtaking scenery along the way. To finish it all off, we arrived at the hot springs in Lares for a well-earned recovery.

A huge thanks to John for the great company and strong running throughout the week. Days like these are exactly why we love sharing these trails. 🏔️🏃‍♂️

When people ask me my favourite route, I always come back to one — the Lares route.

Running through incredible landscapes, passing llamas, alpacas, and vizcachas… with the trails completely to ourselves.

With a range of distance options, it’s a route accessible to every runner — no matter your pace or experience.

Run the Andes — creating experiences, not chasing pace.

Our philosophy: It’s about the experience, not the pace.

Not all runs are the same and today was one of those runs.

Looking for the perfect introduction to trail running in the Andes?

This gentle 9km route takes you through quiet countryside above Cusco, following smooth trails that are mostly flat or gently downhill. Along the way you’ll pass ancient Inca ruins, run through open landscapes with panoramic views, and gradually descend into the city.

The run finishes at San Blas Market, where a fresh juice is the perfect way to end the adventure.

We think this is one of the best routes in the region. Your day begins with an early morning pickup from Cusco or the Sacred Valley, followed by a scenic drive to the Lares trailhead. From here, you’ll set off on a trail run or fast-paced hike to a breathtaking high pass at 4,300 meters, passing crystal-clear lakes, grazing llamas, and remote Andean communities along the way.

After taking in the sweeping views, descend to the natural hot springs for a well-deserved, rejuvenating soak before returning to Cusco in the late afternoon or evening.

A big mountain adventure, all in a single day.

At Run the Andes, our goal is simple: to help people experience the magic of running in Cusco in a way that feels natural, personal, and unforgettable.

Our trail running experiences are designed to take runners off the beaten track and into the landscapes that make this region so special. Routes range from short scenic runs above the city to full-day mountain adventures and multi-day journeys through the Andes.

Every run is flexible — you can run, hike, or mix both — always at your own pace.

Because here, running in Cusco isn’t about how fast you go.

It’s about where the trails take you.

It’s always great to get out on the trails and enjoy what Cusco has to offer. Today was one of those days.

Today was a good day.

We got out on the trails and had the pleasure of showing John one of our favourite routes above Cusco.

Along the way we visited the community of Pucara, where we shared a traditional huatia with local farmers, helped cut some grass and feed the cuyes, and got a small glimpse into their daily life.

Moments like this remind us that running here is about much more than just the trails.

(We also almost came home with a pet goat… 🐐)
