🧂Las Salineras de Maras, también conocidas como salinas de Maras, son un conjunto de más de 3,000 pozos de sal ubicados en las laderas del cerro Qaqawiñay, en el Valle Sagrado de los Incas, en Cusco, Perú.
Su origen se remonta a épocas preincaicas, aunque fueron los incas quienes organizaron y expandieron el sistema como una forma de producción comunal. Según la tradición oral, una fuente de agua salada subterránea fue descubierta por antiguas comunidades andinas. Estas aprendieron a canalizar el agua hacia terrazas pequeñas donde, al evaporarse con el sol, se formaban cristales de sal.
Durante el Imperio Inca, la sal era un recurso muy valioso. Se usaba no solo para la alimentación, sino también en rituales y para conservar alimentos. Las salinas eran administradas por las comunidades locales y la sal se repartía según las necesidades.
Con la llegada de los españoles, el sistema continuó funcionando. Hasta hoy, las salineras siguen siendo gestionadas por familias de Maras, que heredan los pozos y extraen la sal de forma artesanal, como lo hacían sus antepasados.🧂⛰
The Maras Salt Mines, also known as Salineras de Maras, are a group of over 3,000 salt ponds located on the slopes of Qaqawiñay mountain, in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, in Cusco, Peru.
Their origin dates back to pre-Inca times, although it was the Incas who organized and expanded the system into a communal form of production. According to oral tradition, an underground saltwater spring was discovered by ancient Andean communities. These people learned to channel the salty water into small terraces where, after evaporating under the sun, salt crystals would form.
During the Inca Empire, salt was a highly valuable resource. It was used not only for food but also in rituals and for preserving meat. The salt mines were managed by local communities, and the salt was distributed based on need.
After the arrival of the Spanish, the system continued to operate. To this day, the salt mines are still managed by families from Maras, who inherit the ponds and extract the salt by hand, just as their ancestors did.🇵🇪
