THE HUMMINGBIRD THAT LIVES ABOVE THE CLOUDS AT 5000 METERS.

High in the Peruvian Andes, where the landscape becomes colder, wilder and more dramatic, a small hummingbird has adapted to one of South America's most demanding environments.

Meet the Andean Hillstar — Oreotrochilus estella.

This remarkable high-altitude hummingbird inhabits the puna grasslands, rocky slopes, mountain ravines and flowering alpine vegetation of the Andes, often between approximately 3,400 and 5000 meters in Peru.

For photographers, the attraction isn't only the bird.

It's the entire story.

Photograph the Andean Hillstar among native high-Andean flowers, explore its rocky habitat, observe its feeding and territorial behavior, and create environmental wildlife images that show this extraordinary hummingbird in the landscape it calls home.

The species is also fascinating from a natural-history perspective. Its ability to survive extremely cold nights through metabolic torpor is one of the adaptations that allows it to live at elevations where conditions can be severe.

And its nesting ecology is equally intriguing, with females building small cup-shaped nests in protected rocky environments and suitable areas sometimes supporting loose nesting concentrations.
