Pastoruri Glacier – Áncash, Peru
🏔❄️ A Glacier That Still Stands
Pastoruri is one of the last accessible glaciers in Peru, located within the stunning Huascarán National Park in the Cordillera Blanca, Áncash region. Situated at over 5,000 meters (16,400 feet) above sea level, this icy giant has been dramatically affected by climate change, yet still offers the rare opportunity to see snow in the Peruvian Andes without needing to be a mountaineer.
The trail to Pastoruri takes you through breathtaking high-Andean landscapes. Along the way, you’ll encounter Puya Raimondii, an endemic plant of the Andes that can grow up to 12 meters tall and blooms only once every 100 years before dying. The area is also home to unique wildlife and stunning rock formations shaped by glacial erosion.
📍 Pastoruri Glacier is about 3 hours south of Huaraz, the capital of Áncash, and the gateway city for exploring the Cordillera Blanca. From Huaraz, visitors typically travel through the towns of Recuay and Catac before reaching the entrance to the national park.
🧭 While the glacier itself has receded significantly, the viewpoint at the base still provides spectacular scenery, fresh mountain air, and a humbling reminder of the fragility of our natural world.
