While on expedition with the Paleo crew investigating the natural history Pebas mega wetland system , Walter found this incredible tooth from an extinct species of giant ground sloth (Pseudoprepotherium).
Over millions of years, the pebas wetland system slowly dried out into the modern amazonian biome we have today, leaving only traces of the mega fauna that once inhabited South America millions of years ago.

Flip , drop, pull and repeat. This is how I fish the encroaching edges of floodwaters during this season. You'd be surprised what can be lurking next to the trees a few inches below the surface.
Bonus point to whoever IDs the birds calling in the background.

Oscar fish ( Astronotus ocellatus ) caught with golden vibrax spinner #5. I'll add fish bits or Suri grubs to the treble hook to give the fish a taste of something.
This time of the year with high water, the fishing is a bit precarious but not impossible. Teasing the waters around trees and snags with a short line, barely casting. Flip, drop, pull and repeat.
Many fish species follow the floodwaters to the edges of Terra firme, seeking food , shelter and spawning grounds.

Rising waters means flooded forest, not too long ago, we were walking beneath these trees. Seasonal flooding of the Amazon River is a natural occurrence that drives fish populations deep in the jungle searching for food and spawning grounds.

Happy fossil Friday!
Imagine picking through a congealed soup of miscellaneous bones from hundreds of different prehistoric animals. That's exactly what we are doing here! Investigating the biodiversity of the Pebas Mega wetland that covered the current Amazon River basin some 16 million years ago.
Vértebra of extinct caimans, snakes dolphins and sloths are among the most common pieces found.
Here the Paleo team is preparing to make a cast around a messy jumble of bones to be picked apart carefully at the lab.

Seasonal agricultural huts flooded out on an Island of the Amazon River in Peru.
The lower lying mudflats and sand bars can be quite productive for rice, maize, beans and peanuts.
Come high water season and you realize why!
Sediment rich in nutrients is deposited yearly by the seasonal floods. This enriches the soil and cleans it of persistent plagues of insects that may harm crops.
