13,000 YEARS OLD
The Amazon is not empty. It’s not untouched. It’s not “virgin.”

Long before borders and maps, before “discovery,” the forest was already a masterpiece of human care.
New archaeological findings reveal that the Amazon is a cultural landscape, shaped, not spared, by people.

Over 13,000 years, Indigenous communities have cultivated this living mosaic through ingenuity: planting food forests, sculpting black soils, firing ceramics, and weaving riverside civilizations into the rhythm of the earth.

This is not wilderness. It is wisdom, a garden tended by countless generations who understood that to live here is to listen.

At Delfin Amazon Cruises, we navigate this ancient continuum with reverence. Each journey honors the people who built harmony from abundance, who transformed nature without wounding it.
To sail the Amazon is not to enter an untouched world, it is to move through a living archive of memory, resilience, and design.

Restoring the Amazon, One Tree at a Time

In a world where travel is being redefined, Forbes recently highlighted Delfin Amazon Cruises among the global leaders shaping the future of regenerative travel, a movement where exploration and restoration flow as one.

Under the guidance of biologist Gabriela Orihuela, Delfin is restoring life along the Marañón River through a community-led biocultural restoration program. Together with local families, we are reforesting abandoned farmland, creating a 172-hectare restoration corridor, and planting 17 native species that are both ecologically vital and culturally sacred.

Each seed planted carries a story of reciprocity, resilience, and belonging.

Because here, luxury means giving more than we take.

We often hear that 'regenerative tourism’ is just a flashy new buzzword, or a rebrand of sustainability. But that couldn't be further from the truth.

“In Peru, Relais & Châteaux’s Delfin Amazon Cruises offer a more muddy-boots kind of luxury — where elegance meets the wild. A three-ship fleet glides through the mirror-flat waterways of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, home to rare wildlife and pink river dolphins that dance beside the Marañón. Onboard the recently renovated Delfin I, just eight guests are cocooned in wood-panelled suites, pausing for a dip in the plunge pool or a private dinner under the stars. Guided by expert naturalists, every voyage unfolds like a David Attenborough dream — intimate, immersive, and alive.” British Vogue. https://www.vogue.co.uk/article/luxury-boats

"The most impactful moments of the trip were with the local community. A quarter of the drugs used in Western medicine are derived from plants in the Amazon’s rainforest, and a shaman taught us how to use these natural remedies. On a trip to a village, artists demonstrated how they weave pieces inspired by the natural beauty of their home. The Amazon feels so magical and so far removed from the skyscrapers of my daily life, yet in those moments I was reminded how much we have to learn from one another. Why size matters on the river…

As highlighted in ShermansTravel’s guide to the Peruvian rainforest, “the small size of [Delfin’s] boats guarantees personalized service and uncrowded lounges with drinks and snacks available any time of day.”

At Delfin, intimacy isn’t just a perk — it’s the principle. Every suite is a front-row seat to the living forest. Every moment is crafted with intention. And every guest is treated as part of the story, not just a spectator.

Sloths, pink dolphins, capybaras, and Amazonian cultures draw millions of people to the Peruvian rainforests every year. But where you go in the rainforest, and who you go with, make all the difference.

A plant-rich plate. A regenerative promise.

Each year, as part of , we join and in honoring chefs who choose the planet, embracing plant-forward cuisine to reduce their environmental impact in line with ’s 12 Commitments for sustainability.

In the Amazon, chonta, or heart of palm, is much more than an ingredient. Used in a variety of traditional dishes, it carries both flavor and meaning. Through our Chonta Project, for every palm harvested, three are planted, ensuring that the taste of the forest never comes at the expense of its future.

Because at Delfin, we don’t just serve the Amazon, we nurture it.

In The Nature Of, writer Robert Macfarlane reminds us that rivers are not boundaries, but beings — alive, generous, and always becoming. His reflection on “letting rivers heal us” echoes deeply with our own home, the Amazon, where every Delfin journey begins and ends in the rhythm of the water.

For us, the river is not a route. It is our teacher — a living thread connecting nature, craft, and community. As Macfarlane writes of surrendering to flow, we too invite travelers to listen, to move at the river’s pace, and to feel what happens when we stop mastering nature and start belonging to it.

Because here, on the Amazon, healing is not found on the surface — it is carried in the current.

The latest episode of our podcast explores the nature of rivers.

The pink river dolphin is more than a rare species — it’s a keystone of the Amazon’s biodiversity, a cultural symbol for river communities, and a quiet indicator of ecosystem health. With unique adaptations like flexible necks to navigate flooded forests and a color that deepens with emotion or heat, these dolphins embody the spirit of the rainforest. As top predators, they help maintain ecological balance. Protecting them means protecting a living story — of nature, culture, and interconnection.

“With support from Delfin Amazon Cruises, we now collect 24-hour acoustic data from the Pacaya Samiria Reserve — allowing us to understand what happens with pink dolphins even when researchers aren’t present. This gives us insights into their behavior, habitat use, and how to better protect them.”
