Ten thousand square kilometers of salt, and one Casa at the edge of it.

Gastón Ugalde spent sixty years driving out onto the Salar de Uyuni, sometimes for a single photograph, and never once found the light the same. He is considered the father of contemporary Bolivian art.

Gastón left us in 2023. People ask of his son Mariano, “what was the last piece his father made?” The answer is this.

Casa Gastón opened this year at the foot of the Tunupa volcano. Ten suites, facing the largest salt flat on earth. The first hotel-museum in Bolivia, carried forward, uncompromisingly, by the family he left it to.

Marisol sat down with Mariano Ugalde to talk about his father, the salt desert that never let him go, and what it takes to turn an artist’s life into a place you can stay.

Dear Peru,

Your land holds so many lands, and somehow, all of them, unmistakably yours.

In Lima, the fog rolls in from the Pacific, silver and low, softening the edges of a city that pulses beneath.

In the clouds, terraces cut centuries ago still hold their shape, corn and potatoes inside lines drawn by hands long gone.

In the Andes, guardians stand in snow and silence, old enough to have watched empires rise and fall at their feet.

At Titicaca, the lake swallows the sky, and for a moment you cannot tell which one you are standing in.

Drop into your jungle and the green takes over, the Amazon snaking through, giving life and lungs far beyond its borders.

Each of your worlds gives something different, and what it gives, it gives slowly: a fish cured to ceviche by nothing but lime and time, wool spun into thread, thread dyed into color, color woven into cloth, tubers in every hue the earth has made.

Thirty years is barely a breath to you, but you have been everything to us.

THE STORY OF PATAKANCHA // PART I

This is the story of Patakancha. A community sitting at nearly 3,900 metres in the Sacred Valley, and one of the longest relationships in Aracari's history.

Many of the men from Patakancha worked as porters and sherpas for our guides during the Inca Trail back in the late 90s.

We got talking. We visited. And slowly, a relationship built on mutual respect became something more: a shared belief that travel could bring something real to this community, and that our travelers could experience something no standard itinerary would ever offer.

In 1998, we helped establish a medical cabinet in the village, encouraging travelers to donate basic supplies. The photos at the end of this post are from that time.

We stayed in touch with the Quispe family across the years. Eusebio, our contact from the beginning, is still there. Now his children are too.

Last month, thirty years on, Marisol returned.

Corpus Christi arrives in Cusco this week.

On Wednesday, the city begins to stir. Fifteen saints and virgins leave their parish churches and make their way toward the Cathedral on the Plaza de Armas, each carried on an ornate platform, accompanied by brass bands, fireworks, and the communities who have tended these images for generations.

By Thursday, the whole city is there.

What makes Cusco's version of this Catholic feast so compelling is what lies beneath it.

When the Spanish arrived, they found a city already built around procession. The Inca had long paraded the mummies of their emperors through these same streets.

In 1572, a viceroy ordered that Catholic saints replace them. The form survived; the meaning doubled.

Marisol is in the city this week, watching it unfold firsthand.
