The Amazon to Venice.
Sara Flores’s work is at the Biennale this year. For those who understand the tradition it comes from, the Shipibo-Konibo knowledge systems, the visual language passed through generations, the deep roots of this practice in the Amazonian jungle, this moment means something far beyond the art world.
It has been a long road to recognition. And it is one we have had the privilege of following from its source.
These videos take you to Bakish Mai, located in the community of San Francisco, in Ucayali, in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon. It was here that Marisol witnessed this work in its own setting, surrounded by the community and tradition it comes from.
Bakish Mai is a non-profit foundation whose mission is to promote and preserve the creative ways of life, working across three interconnected areas: art, plants and territory.
To see that vision recognized on a stage like Venice is something else entirely.
