Before the farm, before the jungle — we stop here. 🏔️

At Abra Málaga, 4,300 meters up, we bring flowers to the chapel and ask Apu Verónica (Huacay Huillca) for his blessing over the road ahead. Then we warm up with a specialty coffee or hot chocolate at Café El Abra, and take in one of the best views of the whole trip.

It's a small ritual — but it's part of how this journey has always been done.

It gets cold at 4,300m. You'll walk more than you expect. Your hands will end up covered in cacao or coffee cherry juice. You'll eat way more than planned. And yes — the family's story might actually get to you.

None of it is a bad thing. It's just... real.

The coffee farm is only half the journey. ☕🏔️

Before you ever reach the plantation, this tour takes you up to Abra Málaga — 4,300 meters above sea level, where alpacas and llamas graze along the road and snow-capped peaks stretch in every direction.

We stop here for something warm: specialty coffee or hot chocolate, sipped at altitude before the road drops down into cloud forest.

It's one of our travelers' favorite parts of the trip.

This 3-day journey combines a coffee or cacao farm stay, a hike along part of the Inca Jungle trail — rediscovered in 2007 after a landslide cut off Santa Teresa's farmers — and a full Machu Picchu visit.

Cross the Sacred Valley from Ollantaytambo, climb to Abra Málaga (4,300m) for views of Nevado Verónica, then descend into cloud forest. Roast your own coffee or make chocolate from the bean, stay with a local family, and finish with the reward: Machu Picchu.
