🌊 World Ocean Day — Do you know the real meaning of Moana?
In Tahitian, Moana means the deep, open ocean. But to truly understand this word, you need to know another: Mana.
In Polynesian culture, Mana is not simply "power" or "strength" — it is a sacred spiritual energy, an invisible force that flows through living beings, places, and the natural world. A great navigator, an ancient tree, a wave at the right moment — all can carry mana.
So when we say "Te Mana o te Moana", we are saying something far deeper than "the power of the ocean." We are saying: the sacred spirit of the ocean.
And yes — when Disney named their Polynesian heroine Moana (called Vaiana in Europe to avoid a trademark conflict), they were touching on this very concept: a young woman called by the sacred spirit of the sea. The film was developed in close collaboration with Pacific communities, and that spiritual depth was very much intentional. 🌺
Here in Tahiti, Te Mana o te Moana is also the name of a local association carrying that spirit into action every day. Over 20 years, they have cared for more than 650 sea turtles and raised environmental awareness among thousands of schoolchildren.
They run an authorized sea turtle care center, welcoming animals that are sick, injured, or seized by authorities, with the goal of releasing them back into the wild as soon as possible.
