| The Ghost Mountain Track | Inland Rigo | Central Province | PNG🇵🇬
Ghost Mountain, also known as Mount Obree or Suwemalla, is a 3,080m (10,105') peak in Papua New Guinea's Owen Stanley Range, famous for the WWII Kapa Kapa Trail trek. In 1942, the U.S. 32nd Infantry Division ("Ghost Mountain Boys") endured a brutal march over its treacherous terrain, often following the Kemp Welsh River. It is known for steep, razor-sharp ridges, dense rainforest, and phosphorescent, mist-covered trees.
Ghost Mountain and the Area:
▪️Location & Terrain: Situated in Central Province, the area features extremely rugged terrain, often described as "Kokoda on steroids". The area near the Kemp Welsh River was part of the grueling route.
WWII History: In Oct-Nov 1942, American soldiers faced near-starvation, malaria, and dysentery while navigating this route. The mountain was nicknamed for its eerie, mist-covered appearance, causing several U.S. 5th Air Force planes to crash there.
▪️The Trek & Tourism: The Kapa Kapa Trail is being revived as a significant tourism, wartime heritage, and adventure trail, often starting from Dorobisoro village.
▪️Cultural Significance: Local communities, which supported the soldiers during the war, are now trying to revive the trekking after it was briefly trekked back in 2002. This trek passes through remote and very challenging environment with a unique ecology.
The area remains one of the most rugged and untouched trekking experiences in Papua New Guinea, combining intense physical challenges with deep historical and cultural significance.
