BUKA RUGBY GRAND FINAL

The Hutjena Sports Oval is expected to host its biggest crowd yet this weekend, as the Buka Rugby Football League stages its 2026 Grand Finals.

Three premiership deciders will headline the program, with titles on the line in the Under-20, Women’s and A-Grade divisions.

The day’s action kicks off at 11-o’clock in the morning with the Under 20 Grand Final between the Hago Eagles and the Noru Peace Panthers.

At 12:40pm, attention shifts to the Women’s Division, where the Haku Hawks face the Kubu Roosters in a contest expected to draw strong community support.

The main event follows in the afternoon, with the Kuskus Cutters meeting Noru Peace Panthers for the A-Grade crown.

The Cutters stormed into the decider after a commanding 28-points to nil win over the Malasang Warriors, while the Panthers booked their spot with a hard-fought 16-10 victory over the Hago Eagles in the semi-finals.

With three grand finals scheduled, Saturday promises a full day of rugby league entertainment.

Flights between Buka and Nissan will commence mid September, and ticketing opens TODAY! This is great news providing a vital connection between the islands.

We are pleased to announce that our flight service between Buka and Nissan will commence on Monday 14th September.

Bougainville has an incredibly diverse mix of cultural practices, many of which are unique to a particular village or community. The tradition of making and using shell money remains strong in North Bougainville where it is called Paio. Made from tree bark and animal teeth, Paio are important for bride price ceremonies, burial ceremonies and as gifts for chiefs and elders. Of course, a Tama Festival wouldn’t be complete without Tamatama itself. This local delicacy requires a LOT of work to make with men and women both having important roles in the process. Three varieties - banana, taro and cassava - are cooked up in fine clay pots. It’s a very special tradition worth celebrating!

An unexpected highlight of the Tama Festival was the contemporary music competition. The combination of traditional bamboo flutes with drum and bass created a truely unique Bougainville sound that everyone LOVED dancing too!
