Even during this El Nino period, when the lowlands are dry and brown, Wilhelm keeps its own weather. The summit is wrapped in mist that moves like slow breath. One moment the peak is clear, sharp and blue against the sky, the next moment it disappears completely into white cloud, then reappears again as if it was never gone.
Below the summit, the high alpine grasslands stretch out in soft green. The grass is short and thick, bending under the wind, dotted with small alpine flowers. It looks like a green carpet laid across the mountain, still alive because the mountain catches the clouds and holds the moisture in the soil.
In the valleys and on the slopes, ferns are everywhere. Giant tree ferns with wide fronds stand beside smaller ground ferns that curl at the edges. Their leaves are a deep, wet green, glistening with dew and mist. Moss covers the rocks and the trunks of trees, making the forest feel soft and ancient.
Water drips from the fern leaves. The air is cold and fresh. The sound is quiet, just wind through the grass and water dripping in the forest.
It is a place that feels both harsh and gentle at the same time. Harsh because of the cold and the height, gentle because of the green grass, the ferns, and the mist that keeps everything alive even when El Nino dries the rest of the country.
