One of the best things about the eight-day Lemosho Route is how much the landscape changes.

You start in thick rainforest before heading out onto the open Shira Plateau. Then there’s the rocky terrain around Moir Hut, the Barranco Wall and eventually the dry, exposed alpine landscape higher up.

By summit day, it feels like you’re on another planet.

It’s a pretty spectacular way to experience Kilimanjaro, and there’s plenty to see long before you reach the top.

A good break doesn’t need to turn into half an hour.

Drop the pack, have a drink, get some food in, sort your feet or layers if you need to and enjoy sitting down for a few minutes.

Then get moving again before everyone gets too comfortable.

Getting started again is considerably harder once someone has taken their boots off.

There’s a huge amount that goes into getting a group up Kilimanjaro, and most of it happens behind the scenes.

Our local team of guides, porters, cooks and camp crew are the reason these trips run so well.

From getting camp ready each day to keeping everyone fed, sharing a few Swahili lessons and having a laugh along the way, they’re a massive part of the experience.

A big thanks to Godson, Alex and the whole crew. Couldn’t do it without them.

A rain cover is useful, but we still like waterproofing the important stuff inside the pack as well.

Dry bags, pack liners or even a good old rubbish bag will do the job.

Because after six hours of rain, discovering your sleeping gear is still completely dry is a very good feeling!

Three days on safari and a lot of ground to cover.

Tarangire is known for its elephants and enormous baobab trees. Ngorongoro Crater has an incredible concentration of wildlife, while Lake Manyara brings a completely different landscape with forests and views along the Rift Valley.

Each park has its own character, which is what makes combining them so worthwhile.

WHY WE TRAVEL.

Not everything needs to be comfortable.
Not everything needs to be familiar.
Sometimes it’s good to land somewhere you don’t understand.

To eat a meal you can’t pronounce. Get lost in a market. Sit with people whose lives look nothing like yours.

To see how other people live, what they value, what they worry about — and what they don’t.

It gives you perspective.
You quickly realise that the little bubble we build around ourselves isn’t the whole world.

There are different ways to live a good life.
Different definitions of success.
Different ideas about what’s important.

And sometimes the places with less have a funny way of showing you how much you already have.

That’s what we love about travel.
It’s the people. The conversations. The smells. The food. The chaos. The landscapes. The uncomfortable moments. The stuff you couldn’t have planned if you tried.

You go somewhere different for a while.
You pay attention.
And you bring a little bit of that perspective home with you.

That’s why we travel.

KILIMANJARO | THAT’S A WRAP
What an experience.

After months of preparation, our first Driven By Adventure Kilimanjaro group has now completed the journey to the Roof of Africa — followed by a few incredible days exploring Tanzania on safari.

There were plenty of big moments along the way. Eight days on the mountain, long days on the trail, altitude, cold and a summit night that tested everyone.
But there were also plenty of laughs, incredible scenery, an outstanding local crew and the experience of watching a group of people take on something genuinely challenging. Congratulations once again to Jesse, Georgia, Grace and Samara on summiting their first high altitude peak!

A huge thank you to Godson, Alex and the entire Tanzanian team who looked after us from start to finish. The professionalism, hospitality and effort from the guides, porters, cooks and support crew was first class.

I also want to give a big thank you to Glenn Azar. Glenn played a big part in helping us put this trip together and has been incredibly generous with his experience, advice and support along the way. There’s been a lot that’s gone on behind the scenes to get DBA to this point, and Glenn has been an important part of that.

And finishing the trip with a Tanzanian safari was pretty bloody special.
This was DBA’s first Kilimanjaro departure, and having now experienced the entire journey myself, I couldn’t be happier with what we’ve put together.

Kilimanjaro + Tanzania Safari. Two epic experiences. One hell of an adventure.
More to come.

A good adventure doesn’t always need to be dramatic.

Sometimes it’s a cold morning, a long climb and a view that makes everyone stop talking for a minute.

Nothing staged or polished. Just one of those moments where you’re very glad you made the effort to be there.
