Case Summary: Third Molar Removal Due to Infection and Second Molar Involvement
Today, the patient underwent removal of the left mandibular second and third molars following persistent pain and signs of localized infection associated with the impacted third molar. The patient presented with limited mouth opening (trismus) and facial swelling on the left cheek, consistent with acute infection originating from the third molar area.
Clinical and radiographic evaluation revealed that the third molar was impacted and causing distal caries and periodontal compromise to the adjacent second molar. Pre-operative antibiotic therapy was initiated to manage infection and inflammation, allowing for safer extraction.
Due to the compromised prognosis of the second molar and the ongoing infection risk, both the second and third molars were scheduled and successfully removed today.
