A place - called fuga Fuga Wikipedia: Fuga Island is an island in the municipality of Aparri, Cagayan, with an area of 100 km². The island still retains a traditional culture.

Together with its nearshore western neighbor islets Barit (4.8 km²) and Mabag (0.7 km²) it constitutes one of 42 barangays of the city of Aparri. It is located in the northernmost part of the Philippines as part of the Babuyan Archipelago. The highest peak is Mount Nanguringan in the northeast, with an elevation of 191 meters.[1]

According to the census of population in 2000, it has a population

of 1,786 people in 312 households. Principal village is Naguilian (Musa) on the south coast. For example every year they build a small straw imitation of a boat and float it out to sea, a tradition started in 1656 when the island was almost invaded by British ships. Only the quick thinking defense by the natives kept the island from British colonization. Fuga island is a marine & forest reserve (through a Presidential Decree) and therefore cannot be owned by any private individual.

An excerpt from the Biography of Mr. Washington Sycip:
"The other SyCips didn’t fare so well. The Japanese had also imprisoned Albino’s older
brother Alfonso. But on the Japanese emperor’s birthday he pardoned and released
all prisoners over the age of 65. Upon his release, Alfonso decided to bring his entire
family to Fuga Island in Batanes, which he partly owned. He invited Albino’s children
and wife to join them there, but Alex wanted to be able to see his father in prison. As
it happened, that island was later bombed, and several of Alfonso’s family members
died. Albino had known Gen. Douglas MacArthur before the war, and now he asked
the general for help, which MacArthur granted by sending a PT boat to rescue the
surviving SyCips on Fuga".

1999 newsflash: The Fuga Island prospect is seen to yield recoverable natural gas reserves of 5.24 trillion cubic feet of gas based on conservative parameters. Aside from natural gas, Fuga Island is also seen to yield hefty recoverable oil reserves at 1.36 billion barrels.
Drilling at Fuga Island was scheduled to have begun this year, but inclement weather conditions pushed the schedule to a later date.
