THE AMERICAN HISTORIAN WHO HELPED REVEAL THE TRUE STORY OF THE CORDILLERA

Although born in the United States, William Henry Scott (July 10, 1921 โ€“ October 4, 1993) became one of the most respected historians of the Philippines, especially for his groundbreaking studies on the Cordillera, the Igorot peoples, and the country's pre-colonial history. Through decades of meticulous research, he challenged myths, corrected historical inaccuracies, and gave greater recognition to the rich cultures and histories of Indigenous communities.

Scott arrived in the Philippines in 1954 as an Episcopal missionary and teacher and eventually made Sagada, Mountain Province his home. Living among the people of the Cordillera allowed him to gain a deep understanding of their traditions, languages, and way of life. Over time, many Igorot communities came to regard him as one of their own, affectionately calling him "Lakay" (elder).

He earned a doctorate in history from the University of Santo Tomas, where his dissertation became the influential book Prehispanic Source Materials for the Study of Philippine History. His careful examination of early Spanish records helped historians better understand Philippine societies before colonization while separating historical facts from myths. One of his most celebrated achievements was proving that the so-called Code of Kalantiaw was a historical hoax, leading to its removal from Philippine history textbooks.

Scott also authored several landmark books, including The Discovery of the Igorots, Barangay: Sixteenth-Century Philippine Culture and Society, Cracks in the Parchment Curtain, and A Sagada Reader. These works remain essential references for students, researchers, and anyone interested in Philippine history and Indigenous cultures.

William Henry Scott passed away on October 4, 1993, and was buried in Sagada, the community he had served and loved for nearly four decades. In recognition of his lasting contributions, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines unveiled a historical marker in his honor at Saint Mary's School in Sagada in 2021. Today, he is remembered as one of the foremost authorities on Philippine and Cordilleran history, whose dedication to historical truth continues to inspire generations of scholars and Filipinos.
