HIGANTENG ANDAP SA MOUNT PULAG

Trees and plants in parts of Mount Pulag were seen covered in ice early Sunday morning, March 15, as frost locally known as “andap” formed in some areas of the mountain.

Photos taken by Arsenio Pacliwan and Henry Lacbawan showed vegetation coated with a thin layer of ice, a natural phenomenon that occurs when temperatures drop significantly in the high-altitude areas of Kabayan, Benguet.

The same locations were also blanketed with frost on Saturday, March 14, indicating continuing cold conditions in the country’s third-highest mountain.

Local residents refer to the frost as “andap,” which typically forms during very cold mornings when moisture freezes on grass, leaves, and other surfaces.

With the northeast monsoon, locally known as amihan, still affecting Northern Luzon this March, colder temperatures are expected to persist in high-elevation areas like Mount Pulag.

Because of this, tourists are expected to flock to the mountain in the coming days to witness the rare frosty scenery, which transforms the grasslands into a sparkling landscape of ice during the early hours of the morning.
