DID YOU KNOW? | The History of Batanes
✝️ In 1686, Dominican missionaries made the first recorded Christian mission to Batanes. Although it was not immediately successful, it marked the beginning of Christianity's introduction to the islands.
🏛️ On June 26, 1783, Spanish Governor-General José Basco y Vargas officially established Batanes as a province of the Spanish East Indies. Basco became its political and administrative center, bringing organized local government, permanent settlements, and stronger ties with the rest of the Philippine archipelago.
⛪ By 1784, Dominican missionaries founded the first permanent Christian communities in Basco and Ivana, laying the foundation for the towns that continue to preserve Ivatan culture today.
Despite centuries of outside influence, the Ivatan people have proudly safeguarded their identity, language, customs, and remarkable stone houses. making Batanes one of the Philippines' best-preserved cultural landscapes.
