The City Government, through the City Health Services Office (CHSO) and the Smoke Free Task Force, continues to intensify its campaign against smoking and va**ng in public places in the Summer Capital.
The move is in line with Mayor Benjamin Magalongβs directive to deputize barangay officials and volunteers to fully implement the Anti-Road Obstruction, Smoke-Free and Anti-Loitering ordinances.
The CHSO, under Dr. Celia Flor Brillantes, has been conducting orientations in the cityβs barangays to train officials and volunteers on the proper issuance of citation tickets while random inspections remain active, with at least two night inspections per month and surprise checks to ensure compliance.
βGinagawa namin, pumupunta kami per barangay ino-orient ang mga barangay officials and volunteers sa paggamit ng citation tickets. And, of course, tuloy-tuloy pa rin yung ongoing random inspections, at least twice a month na random inspections as well as surprise inspections,β Smoke-Free Task Force Communications Management Officer JD Rivera said.
Data from 2024 shows that 20 designated smoking areas were approved, with 16 establishments renewing their permits this year with applications for smoking areas being carefully reviewed and approvals or denials are based on strict qualifications.
The task force also continues with its Information Education Campaigns, distributing materials and giving reminders during barangay lectures and public gatherings.
Enforcement has been robust, with over 1,000 individuals and establishments apprehended last year by CHSO implementors, the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO), Department of Science and Technology, sanitation division and community enforcers.
Rivera said that last year, more than 1,000 individuals and establishments were apprehended by BCPO personnel, POSD, the sanitation division, and deputized community volunteers in accordance with the ordinance.
