The Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) led by its Administrator, Undersecretary Reynaldo B. Mapagu, and the Local Government Unit of Santa Fe headed by Hon. Liwayway Caramat commemorated the 79th Battle of Balete Pass Anniversary held at Balete Pass National Shrine, Santa Fe, Nueva Vizcaya on May 13, 2024. From veterans to the youth, such as Boy Scouts and students, the whole community came together to honor the brave souls who fought for freedom.

Every 13th of May, the Victory of Balete Pass is celebrated to pay tribute to the gallant Filipino heroes who staked their lives in honor of freedom. The Battle of Balete Pass, which lasted from February 1945 to May 1945, ended with the victory of the Filipinos against the Japanese Forces. Hence, among all the shrines in the country, the Balete Pass National Shrine is the only Victorious Shrine wherein General Tomoyuki Yamash*ta and Japanese Soldiers surrendered during World War II.

Along with celebrating National Heritage Month, may the Battle of Balete Pass Anniversary serve as a reminder of the sacrifice and bravery of our local heroes. Let us also remember the lessons of the past and strive for a future where war is a relic of the past.
