February 1st - on this day in 2003, Space Shuttle Columbia was to land at NASA's Kennedy Space Center's Shuttle Landing Facility, concluding the STS-107 mission.

However, 16 minutes prior to the scheduled touchdown, Columbia disintegrated upon atmospheric re-entry due to undetected extensive damage to its heat shield sustained after launch.

Let us remember the seven astronauts who perished that day:

• Commander Rick Husband (July 12th, 1957 – February 1st, 2003)
• Pilot William McCool (September 23th, 1961 – February 1st, 2003)
• Mission Specialist David Brown (April 16th, 1956 – February 1st, 2003)
• Mission Specialist Kalpana Chawla (March 17th, 1962 – February 1st, 2003)
• Mission Specialist Michael Anderson (December 25th, 1959 – February 1st, 2003)
• Mission Specialist Laurel Clark (March 10th, 1961 – February 1st, 2003)
• Payload Specialist Ilan Ramon (June 20th, 1954 – February 1st, 2003)
