A significant milestone for Philippine culture was announced today, December 9, as UNESCO formally added the traditional creation practice behind Boholโs iconic artisanal sea salt, asin tibuok, to the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding. This global recognition affirms the provinceโs rich cultural identity and reinforces its rising prominence in the countryโs culinary tourism landscape.
The inscription was confirmed during the 20th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in New Delhi, India.
Crafted through a long and careful process that involves filtering seawater through the ashes of burned coconut husks, asin tibuok is a testament to the communityโs enduring knowledge and skill. The result is a distinct, rock-shaped salt with a smoky aroma and earthy depth of flavor, cherished by chefs, home cooks, and travelers alike.
More than a culinary treasure, asin tibuok has become a meaningful keepsake for visitors exploring the Philippinesโ first and only UNESCO Global Geopark. Its story enriches every travelerโs journey and reinforces Boholโs standing as a vibrant cultural and heritage tourism destination.
