Ormoc City Mayor Richard "GOMA" Gomez announces that the country’s flag carrier, Philippine Airlines will soon operate in Ormoc City. The mayor revealed that PAL’s 156-seater Airbus A320 will accommodate the Ormocanons and nearby towns, saving hours of travel time to Tacloban City’s Daniel Z. Romualdez Airport.
This route will primarily cater to the residents of the west coast of Leyte and visitors coming from Manila providing convenience and easier access to the province’s major tourist desinations such as Lake Danao in Ormoc City, Kalanggaman Island in Palompon, Cuatro Islas in Inopacan and Hindang, Lintaon Peak in Baybay City and Canigao Island in Matalom, boosting tourist arrivals in the region.
Ormoc Airport is classified as a Class 2 principal (minor domestic) airport by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP). It had a major PHP34-million rehabilitation project carried out by DOTr and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) that was completed in May 2018.
It includes the expansion of the airport’s total area from 150 square meters to 1,350 sqm, the renovation of the passenger terminal building, and the construction of the administration building. The airport’s runway is being improved to accommodate larger aircraft. —
