LOOK: NUEVA ECIJA GRADE 10 STUDENTS DEVELOP “SPECTRAGUARD” — A MACHINE THAT TESTS ONION QUALITY USING SPECTROMETRY

Seven Grade 10 students from Bongabon National High School in Nueva Ecija have created a breakthrough device called SpectraGuard, designed to assess onion quality using spectrometry. Built in partnership with tech innovator Jermaine Germino of Creant Asia, the invention can detect spoilage and estimate the shelf life of onions — a major crop in their region. Tested at Kasanme Cold Storage in Palayan City, the project earned multiple science fair awards, including champion at the Division Science and Technology Fair and the top prize at the National Science and Engineering Fair 2025. With a development cost of just ₱20,000–₱30,000, the team hopes SpectraGuard can pave the way for tech-driven agricultural solutions across the Philippines.
