Beyond 1521

Beyond 1521 PG Guba. Filipino. Storyteller. Tour Guide. It was the date written in our books that Magellan arrived in our land. What past? During the Spanish Era? American Era?

BEYOND 1521

For most Filipinos, 1521 AD is a year that is stamped in our memory since we had History class in elementary school. I always asked myself what was the Philippines like during that time. To answer all my questions I started walking the streets of Cebu, I began entering museums and finding myself reminiscing the past by spending my time in old churches, forts and houses but I did not f

ind what I’ve been looking for, it only brought me back to the Spanish Era. Then as if a light bulb suddenly lit up I realize that I should be looking far beyond the date 1521. If I wanted to know who the Filipino is, I should go back to when our History was not yet altered by the coming of our conquerors. It’s been said, “To foretell the destiny of a nation, it is necessary to open the book that tells of her past”. Or the Japanese Era? Yes those were part of our past but before we could truly know who we are, we need to know the past which tells us of our ancestors who built the amazing Banaue Rice Terraces without the aid of machines, who engineered the Balangay boats that brought them to other neighboring places and who traded with utmost honesty. But it would not be complete if I will just dig on the years before 1521 I also need to find out what happened to the Filipinos after 1521 to get the big picture of what our History really is. In this BEYOND 1521 journey, I embark on a quest to discover WHO IS THE FILIPINO? WHO ARE THE FILIPINOS?

🌱🍫Sweet Memories with Cacao in CamSur🍫🌱

I joined the journey that started in Luzon, passed by Visayas and ended in Mindanao through the .

The took us on a delightful journey back to my childhood, as we visited a beautiful cacao farm in , . 🌿 The lush greenery and the rich aroma of cacao beans brought back cherished memories of times spent with my beloved grandmother.

As a child, my grandmother would gather all the grandchildren around her. She'd crack open the cacao pods and we'd eagerly dig into the sweet, white pulp of the cacao beans. After savoring the delicious treat, we'd dutifully return the beans to her. She would then dry, roast, and pound them with care and love to create the perfect tablea. Those were magical times, filled with laughter, learning, and the rich, comforting smell of chocolate. 🍫❤️

Our visit today reminded me of a beautiful saying: "Chocolate is happiness that you can eat." 🌟

I felt a deep connection to my roots and an immense gratitude for the traditions that keep our heritage alive. Thank you to everyone who made this visit possible and to all those who work tirelessly to bring the joy of chocolate into our lives.

One of the most visited streets in the Philippines is located in Vigan City, named Calle Crisologo.

A walk or a ride on a horse-drawn carriage known as the calesa will bring you to a bygone era where you can imagine a prosperous place with sliding capiz shell windows and big doors.

Now, some of the houses were converted into restaurants and shops where you get the best of what the province can offer. You may even relive that time by staying in some of the heritage houses that were turned into inns.

But why was it named ?

It was named after Mena Pecson Crisologo, a lawyer, a politician, a poet and pride of .

He founded the town of Salcedo in 1872 and he was part of the Candon Rebellion in 1895. He was caught, tortured and almost executed. He represented Ilocos Sur in the Revolutionary Congress that convened in , on 15, 1898 and was one of the signers of the Malolos Constitution.

In 1901, during the American period, he served as the first provincial governor of Ilocos Sur. He initiated development and infrastructure projects and launched industrial and commercial establishments.

He devoted his time to the popularization of the Ilocano language and literature and made the Ilocanos be aware of their excellence in the musical and literary arts.

Today, 125 years since the signing of the , it is time to review that part of our history.
