The National Committee on Geological Sciences (NCGS) recently conducted a geosite assessment on the historic Capul Island, examining several locations recognized for their geological significance.
Among the key sites visited were the Timon-timon Rock Formation, Alisampan Cove, and Bito Caveโeach offering valuable insights into the islandโs distinct geological features.
The team paid a courtesy call to Vice Mayor Leonora F. Alfaro, who represented Mayor Isidro S. Bandal. Also present during the April 12, 2026 meeting were officials of Barangay Sawang, one of the islandโs oldest barangays. The local leaders warmly welcomed the team, reflecting strong community support for initiatives that promote geodiversity and geoheritage.
One of the islandโs most striking natural features is the Timon-timon Rock Formation, whose shape resembles a shipโs rudderโor โtimonโโevoking Capulโs historical connection to the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade.
The team also explored Alisampan Cove, a scenic site known for its dramatic rock formations and captivating seascapes. Meanwhile, their visit to Bito Cave revealed narrow passageways, unique rock structures, and naturally formed chambers that help illustrate the islandโs geological history.
Further highlighting Capulโs historical and cultural heritage, the team visited the Capul Lighthouse, a prominent landmark overlooking the vast waters of the San Bernardino Strait. Perched on a hill, the lighthouse stands as a testament to the islandโs rich maritime past.
Together, these sites underscore Capul Islandโs exceptional blend of natural beauty, history, and cultural significanceโpositioning it as a quiet yet meaningful destination for exploration and heritage appreciation.
This initiative was made possible through the continued support and vision of Governor Harris Christopher M. Ongchuan. Through his geodiversity development program, the province continues to highlight and promote its natural and cultural treasures, fostering both heritage preservation and opportunities for sustainable development.
