❗️ 𝐁𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐆❗️

We are thrilled to share with you that Bohol Island has officially become the very first Global Geopark of the Philippines. This groundbreaking decision took place during the 216th Executive Board Session of the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in the city of Paris, France on 24 May 2023.

The UNESCO Global Geopark designation is a prestigious recognition bestowed upon exceptional places or regions that showcase geological sites and landscapes of international and special importance. These sites, together with important ecological, cultural, and archeological heritage sites, are meticulously managed through a comprehensive approach that encompasses conservation, education, research, and responsible tourism.

By adopting the geopark concept, relevant stakeholders from both the public and private sectors are encouraged to work together, fostering the promotion and practice of geoheritage conservation, geoscience education, environmental awareness, cultural heritage preservation, and sustainable development within the geopark.

Bohol Island, along with 17 other new geoparks, will soon join the Global Geoparks Network, bringing the total number of members to 195 this year. The Network provides a platform for international cooperation, allowing global geoparks and aspiring geoparks to share best practices and enhance the UNESCO Global Geopark brand.

The Provincial Government of Bohol, as the core management institution of the Bohol Island Geopark, extends its deepest gratitude to the members of the technical working group, technical advisers, partners from the academe, schools, non-government organizations, national government agencies, local government units, tour agencies, local businesses, volunteers, and supporters who made this dream a reality.

May this milestone inspire us more to collaborate for the sustainable development of our geopark and serve as an inspiration for other regions and provinces in the Philippines to follow suit.

Abante Bohol!
Daghan kaajong salamat!

LOOK: OLD PHOTOS OF CHOCOLATE HILLS

Take a nostalgic trip back to 1981 with a glimpse of Bohol's iconic Chocolate Hills.

These remarkable geological formations, characterized by their perfect cone shapes, uniform heights, and sizes, resemble unwrapped giant chocolate kisses when viewed from above. The Chocolate Hills span an expansive area of over 50 square kilometers, boasting more than 1,260 cone-shaped hills ( it's also reported that they are as many as 1,776 Chocolate Hills scattered around in 3 Municipalities namely Carmen, Sagbayan, and Batuan.)
Ranging in height from 98 to 160 feet, with the tallest hill reaching 390 feet, these natural wonders have captured national attention.

On June 18, 1988, the Chocolate Hills were officially declared the country's National Geological Monument and this recognition reflects their scientific value and unique geomorphic features, leading to a proposed inclusion in the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List.

Throughout the year, the lush green grass covering the Chocolate Hills transforms into a rich brown hue during the dry season, lending them their fitting name. As time passes, these timeless natural formations continue to captivate visitors and locals alike, showcasing the beauty of Carmen Bohol's magnificent Chocolate Hills.
