Experience like a local by visiting a shotengai, or shopping street!
Senbayashi Shopping Street, located in northeast Osaka, has over a century of history and is known as Osakaβs most affordable shopping street.
Senbayashi Shopping Street is lined with many mom-and-pop businesses frequented by local residents. It offers a glimpse at a different side of Osaka than the popular tourist spots and commercial districts. Located right outside Senbayashi Station, this shopping street arcade offers fresh fruits and vegetables, small snacks that you can eat as you explore, general goods, and even clothing and apparel.
This shopping street arcade has over 200 shops, all under a long, arched roofway that provides protection from the rain. Be sure to check out the vintage storefronts and signs, which testify to the shopping streetβs long history.
Shops selling croquettes for 100 yen or bread for 99 yen are perfect for visitors looking for a snack to munch on while wandering the shopping street, all for a steal. Stop by one of the retro cafes selling traditional Japanese sweets for a taste of a Japan from the past.
If youβre not sure where to start, why not follow the crowd? Choose a shop based on popularity, and itβs guaranteed to be delicious!
From shop owners calling out energetically to passersby to locals riding leisurely on bikes, Senbayashi Shopping Street offers a more intimate view of Osaka than the usual tourist spots!
