December 18

Feast of
OUR LADY OF REMEDIES OF CEBU, also known as BIRHEN SA COTTA (Our Lady of the Fort)

Fort San Pedro in Cebu City was the site of the original image found floating in a well, sometime between 1570 to 1575, during the construction of the Fort.

The image was originally enshrined inside the fort but was transferred to the cathedral in mid 19th century for security reasons, where a chapel waa dedicated in Her honir, until it was lost during the bombing of the cathedral in WW2.

A replica image and glass case was donated to the Fort by a devotee when a well was redisxovered there in 2006.

Since then, the Virgin of the Fort, also known as Our Lady of Remedies of Cebu is feted by Her faithful devotees every 18th day of Decenber, the original feast day of this Marian title in Cebu.

Thank you Rev. Fr. Peter Monteron Parish Priest of Remedios Parish of A.Lopez, Labangon for the Appreciation and being a part of the SUBAY SA KAGIKAN. We are very honored for this endeavour.

The history of the Virgen de los Remedios in Cebu City is associated with a miraculous image that gained devotees for its purported healing powers, eventually being transferred to the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral around the mid-1800s. The original image was likely lost during World War II when the Cathedral was bombed, leading to the creation of new images to revive the devotion.
• The venerated image, originally associated with a well whose waters were said to have miraculous properties, was given the name "Nuestra Señora de los Remedios" due to the cures attributed to the Virgin.
• The image was transferred to the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral in the mid-1800s and was housed in the Capilla del Bautisterio, gaining a reputation for being miraculous.
• Her feast day was celebrated every December 18.
• During World War II, the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral was bombed.
• While stories circulated that the original image was spared, its whereabouts became unknown, and the original image was considered lost.
• To maintain the devotion, two replacement images were commissioned.
• One image was placed in the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral.
• Another was placed at Fort San Pedro, with both images holding significant historical value.
