are archaic terms used in the Philippines to describe a person of pure overseas Chinese ancestry, or Mestizo de Sangley, which are persons of mixed Chinese and native Filipino ancestry (the latter were referred to in Spanish: Indio, lit. 'Indian', as natives of the East Indies) respectively during the Spanish Colonial Era in the Philippines. The Sangley Chinese were ancestors to both modern Chinese Filipinos and modern Filipino mestizo descendants of the Mestizos de Sangley. (These were Chinese mestizos, mixed descendants of Sangley Chinese and native Filipinos), who were mestizos (mixed peoples) under the Spanish Colonial Empire, classified together with other Filipino mestizos.

Mestizo de sangley is a term that arose during Spanish colonization of the Philippines, where circumstances were different from colonial settlement of the Americas. During the Spanish colonization of the Americas of the 16th and 17th centuries, numerous male Spaniards (conquistadors, explorers, missionaries, and soldiers) settled there. For decades most Spanish men made liaisons and intermarried with indigenous women; their children were considered mixed race and were called mestizo.

Miguel Lopez de Legazpi Monument, located beside Fort San Pedro... The first Governor General in Cebu (1565-1569) and the Philippines (1570-1571). In 1564, King Philip II of Spain ordered another Spanish Expedition to retrace the route of Ferdinand Magellan in 1521, and to get first hand information on the places the Magellan - Elcano Expedition has visited.... On April 28, 1565, exactly 44 years after the death of Magellan, Miguel Lopez de Legazpi arrived in Cebu with little resistance from the natives.

While it is true that it was Ferdinand Magellan who introduced Christianity in Cebu in 1521 by way of the Baptism of Rajah Humabon and Queen Juana and 800 of their subjects, the actual Evangelization started only upon the arrival of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi in 1565 following the re-discovery (kaplag) of the image of the Sto. Nino in one of the burning Huts in the village of Zubu... It was Legazpi who spread the Christian Faith all over the Philippines.

The Spanish Fortress is accentuated with Blue Lights, the Official Color of the 500 Years Quincentennial Celebration of the Introduction of Christianity in the Philippines led by Ferdinand Magellan (The Explorer), Fr. Pedro Valderrama (The Chaplain), Antonio Pigafetta (The Chronicler) and Juan Sebastian de Elcano (The Master Navigator)...

The Fort also symbolizes as the First Spanish Settlement (1565) in the country and the Headquarters of the First Spanish Governor General (1565 - 1569), El Conquistador Miguel Lopez de Legazpi.

Fuerte de San Pedro is a military defense structure in Cebu (Philippines), built by the Spanish under the command of Miguel López de Legazpi, first governor of the Captaincy General of the Philippines.
The original fort was made of wood and built after the arrival of Legazpi and his expedition. In the early 17th century a stone fort was built to repel Muslim raiders. Today's structure dates from 1738 and is the oldest triangular bastion fort in the country. It served as the nucleus of the first Spanish settlement in the Philippines. During the Philippine Revolution at the end of the 19th century, it was attacked and taken by Filipino revolutionaries, who used it as a stronghold.
