IN PHOTOS || CULION: Transforming the ”Island of the Living Dead" to the "Island of Hope"

In the Calamian Archipelago, Culion is a treasure with a sad but motivating past. Previously recognized as the largest leprosarium all over the world, the municipality functioned as a sanctuary for individuals suffering from leprosy throughout the American colonial era.

But right now, the island is no longer defined by its past. Instead, it has emerged as a symbol of hope and healing. Visitors can explore the Culion Museum and Archives, which tell the compelling story of the island's unique history, showcasing medical equipment, photographs, and documents that chronicle the fight against leprosy. The remnants of its historical buildings, such as the La Immaculada Concepcion Church and the old hospital, stand as silent witnesses to its past.

Following a recent change in ownership and management, RER Travel and Tours temporarily paused operations in January 2024. During this period, no bookings were accepted. No tours, both inland and island tours, have been made since January 2024.
