The Culion Museum and Archives has once again exemplified grateful recognition by its invaluable role as Custodian of the Culion Leprosy Archives by UNESCO Philippines inscribed in the Memory of the World Committee for Asia and the Pacific (MOWCAP) Regional Register, given on the 29th of April 2025 (today) at the Department of Foreign Affairs. This accolade highlights the importance of preserving the history and experiences of individuals affected by leprosy, ensuring that their stories are remembered and studied for future generations.

The significance of this recognition extends beyond just honoring the museum’s efforts; it underscores the cultural and historical importance of the Culion Leprosy Archives. By safeguarding these documents and materials, the Culion Museum and Archives plays a crucial role in educating the public about the disease, the stigma associated with it, and the resilience of those who lived through it. This acknowledgment by notable figures and signed by Nick A. Deocampo -Chairperson, National Memory of the World Committee and Ivan Anthony S. Henares PhD. -Secretary General, UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines, is a testament to the dedication of the institution in preserving an essential part of history, contributing to a greater understanding of social issues.

The involvement of UNESCO in this process highlights the global importance of the archives, encouraging further support and awareness for similar initiatives worldwide. As the museum continues to grow and evolve, it remains committed to its mission of highlighting the narratives of marginalized communities who have faced challenges due to leprosy and other health-related issues.

Undeniably, another profound legacy from Dr. Cunanan during his tenure as our Medical Center Chief is the emphasis on teamwork and collaboration among the staff. His leadership inspired a culture of unity and mutual support, setting the foundation for excellence in patient care. The collective efforts of our CSGH staff have created a resilient environment where challenges are met with determination. By honoring the memories of our past achievements, we empower ourselves to embrace the future with renewed strength and purpose as we continue to serve our community.

With all the challenges we face as an institution every day, it is essential to seek and share sources of inspiration that can uplift our spirits and guide us forward. Each obstacle we encounter offers an opportunity for growth and resilience. By reflecting on stories of perseverance and success, we can remind ourselves of our collective strengths and goals. Together, we can cultivate a supportive environment that encourages innovation and collaboration, ensuring that we remain focused on our mission despite the difficulties we may encounter.

The Sandovals of Isla Calamian or Culion

1850
Another couple from Iloilo requested Fray Mariano to stay put in the Isla Calamian otherwise known Culion to make to indulge in trade & commerve. They boarded a trading vessel from Iloilo to Culion. The couple was Señor Laurente Jalbuena Sandoval and Señora Estefania Sousa Rodriguez Sandoval. According to their documents presented to Fray Mariano, cura parroco, Señor Sandoval was from Jaro, and Señora Sousa Rodriguez was from Molo, Iloilo. They got married at ages 32 and 30 respectively. They opted to move out from Iloilo and stayed in Culion to partake in the booming economy of Culion. Being the most developed, progressive and known trading población that time in the Islas Calamianes ( Calamian Group of Islands). At first they rented out a sizeable house owned by one Leodegario Macanas located along the coastal area of Culion. In 1853, Señor Laurente Sandoval and his family were permitted by the Fray Mariano to develop the tandol on the right side of the fuerte de piedra in Culion. He built his large materiales fuertes residential house and repair bay for his various sizes of vessels used in bartering for balinsasayaw, livestock, marine products, and other objects of trading from the different households in Busuanga and Reinapacan ( later becomes Linapacan). In the same year, the parents of Estefania similarly moved to Culion from Iloilo together with 3 of her siblings Luis Jalbuena Rodriguez, Flaviana & Doroteo. IN PHOTOS || CULION: Transforming the ”Island of the Living Dead" to the "Island of Hope"

In the Calamian Archipelago, Culion is a treasure with a sad but motivating past. Previously recognized as the largest leprosarium all over the world, the municipality functioned as a sanctuary for individuals suffering from leprosy throughout the American colonial era.

But right now, the island is no longer defined by its past. Instead, it has emerged as a symbol of hope and healing. Visitors can explore the Culion Museum and Archives, which tell the compelling story of the island's unique history, showcasing medical equipment, photographs, and documents that chronicle the fight against leprosy. The remnants of its historical buildings, such as the La Immaculada Concepcion Church and the old hospital, stand as silent witnesses to its past.

See these images taken by Paul Rob Cunanan and understand why Culion is more than simply a location; it's a trip across time where history and natural beauty entwine to provide a singular and unforgettable encounter. Culion is a place you should not miss regardless of your interests—history, the outdoors, or travel seeking off-the-beaten-path experiences.
