Before Jiufen Old Street became Taiwan’s iconic, glowing hillside wonderland, it was home to just nine families!

Long before it turned into a global bucket-list sensation, this mountain village was so isolated that it didn't have a single shop. Whenever traveling merchants made the steep trek up the mountain with supplies, the residents would always place a single order divided into exactly "nine portions" (one for each household). In Chinese, "Jiu Fen" (九份) literally translates to "nine portions"—and the name stuck!

Today, those quiet hills have transformed into an electrifying maze of glowing red lanterns, vibrant teahouses, and legendary street food that looks like it stepped straight out of an anime dreamscape.
