Palawan Island of the Philippines was awarded for the fourth time as the "Best Island in the World", by the prominent travel publication, Travel + Leisure. The Department of Tourism (DOT) on Thursday, July 9, celebrated the citation of the island.
In a statement, DOT Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said, “Palawan reclaimed its rightful place in the World’s Best Awards. The citation as the Best Island in the World is all the more important because this is voted upon by the readers of the prominent Travel + Leisure (T+L) magazine."
Palawan yielded a score of 94.83 in the survey of the magazine to obtain the title of the "Best Island in the World 2020". The island placed second last year with 90.87 points.
In an article, T+L writer Sara Clemence described Palawan as "dramatic at sea level, with mountains rising directly from the ocean palm-edged beaches.”
"Though it’s difficult to reach from many parts of the world, once travelers get there they can dive in World War II wrecks, explore old-growth rain forests, and paddle one of the world’s longest subterranean rivers at Puerto Princesa," Clemence added.
Along with Palawan, another famous Philippine tourist spot, Boracay also paved its way to the 14th spot of the said citation with a score of 88.22.
This is the third recognition garnered by the country since quarantine measures have been imposed in various parts of the world due to the health crisis.
