Snake Mating Season: What Hikers Should Know
Warm months bring more snake activity, as they search for food and mates. Here’s how to hike safely while respecting nature!
⚠️ Snake Awareness on the Trail
✔️ Stay on clear, well-used paths to avoid surprising them.
✔️ Watch your step and where you rest. Check logs, rocks, and shaded areas first.
✔️ If you see a snake, give it space. Most will move away on their own.
✔️ Use trekking poles or tap the ground ahead to alert snakes of your presence.
🐍 Snakes Are Not Aggressive!
Most snakes prefer to avoid humans and will slither away when they sense movement. If you encounter one:
✔️ Stay calm and still. Let it move away naturally.
✔️ Do not touch or chase it.
✔️ Take a step back and continue on your way.
🌿 Respect Their Space! Snakes play an important role in the ecosystem by keeping rodent populations in check. Give them distance, and they’ll do the same!
