The festival's name "Sagawak" originates from a tagakaulo term meaning "the force flow of water" in casting curses in the historical events, tribal wars and it is a celebration honoring the Tagakaulo Tribe and diversity of culture in the Municipality of Malalag. Malalagueños celebrates its primary event on May 28. The Provincial Tourism Development and Culture Promotions Office (PTDCPO), together with the Local Government Unit of Hagonoy, conducted a pre-inspection on May 21, 2026, at Mandala Beach Resort Hagonoy in Malalag, Davao del Sur. The activity aimed to support the establishment’s development and preparation for accreditation while enhancing its potential for tourism promotion.

The initiative also supports the creation of audio-visual promotional materials to further showcase Hagonoy and attract more visitors from across the province and the region. Through these efforts, local tourism destinations continue to gain greater visibility and opportunities for growth.

In line with the activity, Provincial Tourism Development and Culture Promotions Office (PTDCPO) also conducted the Accommodation Capacity Survey (ACS) in Hagonoy to gather updated tourism data on accommodation facilities and services. The activity highlights the shared commitment of tourism stakeholders to sustainable tourism development and the promotion of Hagonoy as a growing tourism destination in Davao del Sur.

The Provincial Tourism Development and Cultural Promotions Office (PTDCPO) successfully attended the opening ceremony of the 73rd Araw ng Malalag: Sagawak Festival held at Malalag Fish Landing Facility, Brgy. Baybay, Malalag, Davao del Sur. The Sagawak Festival is a vibrant celebration of the rich cultural heritage of the Tagakaolo Indigenous Cultural Community. It highlights the community’s unique traditions through colorful cultural performances, traditional music and dances, rituals, and indigenous attire. The festival serves as a vital platform for cultural expression, unity, and the continued preservation of indigenous identity in the region.

The PTDCPO also participated in the “Coastal Upland Tourism Escapade Savoring Taste and Tradition Expo (CUTEST Expo). During the activity, the office conducted interviews with local exhibitors to collect information and identify potential destinations and products of the municipality of Malalag. This engagement also forms part of PTDCPO’s ongoing efforts to collaborate with local government units, cultural bearers, and community stakeholders in strengthening cultural tourism circuits across Davao del Sur.

The event gathered tourism stakeholders, exhibitors, travel agencies, and regional tourism offices from across the country.

The fair featured both 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬-𝐭𝐨-𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 (𝐁2𝐁) 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬-𝐭𝐨-𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐫 (𝐁2𝐂) sessions, providing an avenue to promote tourism destinations and strengthen industry partnerships.

The activity was successfully carried out through the collaboration and support of partner agencies, barangay officials, MDRRMO, MENRO, the Philippine Army – Magsaysay, and the Municipal Tourism Office of Magsaysay. The assessment was executed with efficiency, technical accuracy, and strict adherence to applicable environmental and legal standards.

Prior to the cave assessment, an orientation was conducted for stakeholders and partner agencies to discuss the objectives, guidelines, and proper environmental protocols for the activity.

As part of our ongoing mission to preserve our roots, our team visited Mr. Osman Bulani, (a proud Blaan member) diving deep into the rich cultural narratives of the community. In an incredible act of generosity, Mr. Bulani donated six priceless artifacts to be displayed in the Davao del Sur Provincial Museum, a noble contribution that will soon be formalized through a signing of a Deed of Donation. ⁣

May 14, 2026 | In celebration of Ocean Month 2026, the Provincial Tourism Development and Culture Promotions Office heartfully participated in the Coastal Cleanup and Mangrove Tree Planting activity held at Brgy. Bato, Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur, led by the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) through its Integrated Coastal Management (ICM) Program.

The activity brought together volunteers, partner agencies, and community members who shared their time and efforts in cleaning the shoreline and planting mangroves to help protect and preserve our coastal environment. Through the collective efforts and cooperation of everyone involved, the initiative reflected a strong commitment to environmental sustainability, responsible tourism, and the continuous protection of the rich natural resources of Davao del Sur.
