The Municipality of Gamay proudly marks a significant milestone with the official launching of Canbilay Cave in Brgy. Malidong.

The program opened with a warm welcome message from Punong Barangay Hon. Carlito Esponilla, followed by an environmental message from CENRO Jenny Rose Coral. A message from the Municipal Mayor, Hon. Timoteo T. Capoquian, Jr., was delivered through his representative, SB Member Hon. Crisanta Montances, Chairperson on Tourism.

An inspiring message was also shared by DMO IV Mr. Dennis Areño, highlighting the importance of sustainable tourism development, while MENRO Mr. Pepe Turla delivered the acknowledgment of participants and partners. The ceremony was further graced by the presence of SB Members Hon. Aida Calim and Hon. Rennie Rebay, Canbilay Cave Council Members, CPEOs, and DENR and LGU Personnel.

This initiative underscores the strong commitment of the local government to promote eco-tourism and preserve natural heritage, a priority under the Mayor’s administration.

GEOSITE INVENTORY AND ASSESSMENT IN GAMAY, NORTHERN SAMAR

The National Committee on Geological Sciences (NGS), in coordination with the Provincial Government of Northern Samar (PGNS), successfully carried out the Day 1 and Day 2 activities (April 17–18, 2026) of the Geosite Inventory and Assessment in the Municipality of Gamay as part of the province’s ongoing effort to advance its bid as an aspiring UNESCO Global Geopark.

On Day 1, the assessment team conducted site visits to the following geosites:
• Araw Beach, Brgy. San Antonio
• Linao Falls and Ginlugayan Falls, Brgy. Cabarasan
• Lia’s Botanical and Nature Park, Brgy. Libertad (Pob.)
• Nabunglayan Rock Formation, Brgy. Baybay District (Pob.)

On Day 2, the team proceeded to Brgy. Malidong and assessed:
• Canbilay Cave
• Pangpang Falls
• Agiw Falls

The activity was led by experts from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau – Central Office (MGB-CO), including Mr. Leopoldo Virtucio, Mr. Edrian Tubalado, and Ms. Ruth Madrideo, whose technical expertise contributes to the validation, documentation, and evaluation of priority geosites in the province.

The Province continues to encourage strong collaboration among stakeholders to support this significant initiative toward sustainable geotourism and heritage conservation.

DAY 2 – GEOSITE INVENTORY AND ASSESSMENT IN GAMAY, NORTHERN SAMAR

On the second day of the geosite inventory and assessment, the team continued its fieldwork in Brgy. Malidong, visiting Canbilay Cave, Pangpang Falls, and Agiws Falls. These sites were carefully documented and evaluated as part of the ongoing effort to identify and validate key geosites in support of Northern Samar’s aspiration for UNESCO Global Geopark recognition.

The activity highlights the municipality’s rich natural heritage and reinforces the importance of sustained collaboration in preserving and promoting these significant geological assets.

The geosite inventory and assessment in the Municipality of Gamay continued today with the third stop at Lia’s Botanical and Nature Park in Brgy. Libertad (Poblacion) showcasing the area’s rich biodiversity and ecological value.

The team concluded the day’s field activity at the Nabunglayan Rock Formation in Brgy. Baybay, one of the municipality’s notable geological features, where further documentation and evaluation were conducted.

This ongoing initiative forms part of the Province’s commitment to strengthening its bid as an aspiring UNESCO Global Geopark through systematic validation and documentation of its priority geosites.

As part of the ongoing Geosite Inventory and Assessment in Northern Samar, the assessment team proceeded to Linao Falls and Ginlugayan Falls in Brgy. Cabarasan, Gamay, Northern Samar as the second destination for Day 1.

The team conducted site validation and collected geological samples to support scientific documentation, contributing to the province’s continued efforts toward its Aspiring UNESCO Global Geopark status.

DAY 1 – GEOSITE INVENTORY AND ASSESSMENT IN GAMAY, NORTHERN SAMAR

The National Committee on Geological Sciences (NGS), in coordination with the Provincial Government of Northern Samar (PGNS), is currently conducting the Geosite Inventory and Assessment across Northern Samar from April 8 to 20, 2026. This initiative forms part of the province’s continuing efforts to strengthen its bid as an aspiring UNESCO Global Geoparks site, focusing on the validation, documentation, and evaluation of priority geosites for inclusion in the official geosite database.

The assessment team is composed of experts from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau – Central Office (MGB-CO), Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (DOST-PNRI), and University of the Philippines Diliman – National Institute of Geological Sciences (UPD-NIGS), ensuring a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to the activity.

Today, the team visited the Municipality of Gamay, with their first stop at Araw Beach in Brgy. San Antonio—one of the identified sites for assessment. The Province continues to call for coordination and support from concerned offices to facilitate this important undertaking, in adherence to existing laws, regulations, and permitting processes.
