PUPUWA: A Living Tradition of Gasan, Marinduque

Pupuwa is one of the most unique and sacred intangible cultural traditions observed in Gasan, Marinduque every Good Friday. Rooted in deep faith and devotion, it features women cloaked in black lace garments, their faces completely hidden under large, dome-shaped headdresses made of fresh green leaves —known as “pupuwa.” These women walk barefoot, holding candles or rosaries, in a solemn procession that symbolizes mourning and penance.

We invite everyone to come and witness PUPUWA this Good Friday in Gasan, Marinduque.
