Before Marinduque became known as the “𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑷𝒉𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒑𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒔 🤎,” its name carried the weight of centuries—of indigenous culture, Spanish conquest, and enduring legends.

Historians trace the name “𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐪𝐮𝐞” to the old Visayan word “𝒎𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒈” 𝒐𝒓 “𝒎𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒖𝒈”, meaning “𝒕𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒈𝒂𝒏𝒕”—a likely reference to ⛰️ 𝐌𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐠, the island’s mystical and towering volcano. This natural sentinel was once the guidepost for early Austronesian settlers and Spanish explorers arriving by sea.

The Spanish introduced Christianity, building churches like the ⛪️ 𝐁𝐨𝐚𝐜 𝐂𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐥 (1792)—now a historical landmark and a silent witness to the Filipino struggle against colonial oppression.

🌊✨ Introducing you, 𝗚𝗮𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿 𝗜𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 from the town of 𝗚𝗮𝘀𝗮𝗻, 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗾𝘂𝗲!

🏝️ Gaspar Island is the largest among the famous 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝘆𝗲𝘀 𝗜𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 off the coast of Gasan. Named after one of the Three Kings, also known as the 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗻 𝗼𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝗴𝗶.

🪸 It has a short stretch of 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵, known for its vibrant marine life and calm, turquoise waters—perfect for snorkeling, exploring, or simply unwinding in nature’s quiet embrace.

📅 In 𝟭𝟵𝟴𝟭, a sunken ship was found in the area over 130 feet under the waters between Gaspar and the mainland. It was one of the Chinese pirate 𝗟𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗴’𝘀 𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘀. The find surrendered artifacts and treasures which are worth millions of pesos. Some of them are porcelain jars and plates. The 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘂𝗺 recovered various artifacts from the wreckage. Today, all of the artifacts are now displayed in the museum for exhibit.
