● Anglican missionaries from the US built the Episcopal Church of St. Mary the Virgin in 1904.
● The church is a triangular dome structure featuring an altar with a tall and emaciated image of Christ amid a backdrop of cave-like rock formations.
● A bishop who had served at the church is buried a few feet from the main altar.
● Calvary Hill is named after the huge cross on top of it and the town cemetery, a sign of strong Episcopalian influence on the community.
● Sagada residents are buried according to the way they died. Sites are designated for deaths due to su***de, murder, illness, accident or childbirth.
● Ashes from firewood can be seen near most gravestone markers. Lighted candles are impossible to maintain in rainy or windy weather.
● The coffins are positioned horizontally on the face of a sheer rock wall, and each one rested on two metal bars placed underneath for support.
● Most of the coffins are short for remains in fetal position. The empty coffin is first positioned on the wall and then the remains, are wrapped in cloth and passed on down a long chain of community members, followed suit. It is believed that community members whose hands get stained by fluid from the remains would enjoy good luck.
