WHERE'S THE PAPAYA?
I’ve been to El Nido more times than I can count, but this was my first time setting foot on Papaya Island and honestly, I don’t know why it took me so long.
With a name like Papaya Island, you’d expect rows and rows of papaya trees, right? Well… surprise! There were only about 2–3 small papaya trees when we visited. 😅 In fact, there were more coconut trees than papayas. But somehow, that made it even more charming.
What truly makes this island special isn’t the fruit, it’s the sand. Super fine. Powdery white. The kind that feels soft under your feet and makes you want to slow down and stay awhile. The coastline is small, but beautifully curved, intimate, peaceful, and perfect for sunbathing without the usual crowd.
And yes, they sell freshly picked buko (coconut) right there. There’s something about sipping cold coconut water while staring at turquoise waters that just feels… complete.
When we arrived, there were only a few people around, mostly foreigners quietly soaking in the view. No loud music. No big groups. Just calm waves, warm sun, and that laid-back island vibe.
Papaya Island may not have many papaya trees, but it has something better... an unexplainable charm that makes you pause, breathe, and appreciate the moment.
Sometimes, the smallest islands leave the biggest impressions.
