What Counts as a “Damaged Passport”?

Wondering if your passport is still good for travel?

“Damage” generally means anything that makes your passport look tampered with, suspicious, unreadable, or unusable. Here’s what counts as damaged:
• Torn pages — even small tears on visa pages or your information page
• Water damage — wrinkled, swollen, discolored, or stuck-together pages
• Ink smudges or stains — especially if they affect your photo, personal data, or visa pages
• Faded or missing information — if your name, photo, passport number, or expiry date becomes hard to read
• Broken passport chip — for e-passports, if the RFID chip is cracked or no longer works
• Detached cover — if the cover is partly or fully detached from the pages
• Scratches, holes, or severe marks — especially on the data page

Minor things like light creases, slight bends, or tiny smudges from normal use are usually not considered damage.

Important:
If immigration or airline staff doubt the authenticity of your passport due to its condition, they can refuse your boarding or entry.
