NATIONAL HERITAGE MONTH

Built in the 1800s by Roman Vital and Ysabel Gonzalez along Calle Gobierno, the grand house was later inherited by Amparo Vital-Frofiello before being transferred in the 1920s to Dr. Raymundo Azurin, the family physician of the Vitals.

During the Japanese occupation, the mansion was used as a hospital by Japanese forces and was later returned to the descendants after liberation.

In the late 20th century, the landmark became locally known for its restaurant before gradually falling into structural decline in the new millennium.

It is truly heartening to see Iloilo City being recognized on a larger stage once again — this time at ASEAN Climate Week 2026 — as a model for sustainable urban development.

When we began initiatives such as river rehabilitation, urban greening, and people-centered planning, our goal was always simple: to create a city that is safer, healthier, and more livable for every Ilonggo.

We wanted progress that could be felt not only in infrastructure and roads, but in cleaner surroundings, better public spaces, and stronger opportunities for everyone.

To know that these efforts are now being highlighted as examples for the region is both humbling and deeply meaningful. It reminds us that local action, when guided by sincerity and long-term vision, can truly make a difference.
