What if a used plastic bottle could buy you internet access?

At Iloilo City Hall, that idea has become a reality through the ECO-NNECT Bottle-to-WiFi Vendo, an innovative machine that rewards proper waste disposal with free WiFi connectivity.

The concept is simple: deposit a Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) bottle—the type commonly used for bottled water, soft drinks, and other beverages—into the machine and receive free internet access. Depending on the type of plastic deposited, users can enjoy a minimum of 20 minutes free WiFi for every PET bottle.

"Gin-launch naton ang Eco-nnect Bottle to WiFi Vendo, isa ka innovative program nga nagahatag sang 20 minutes nga libre nga WiFi in exchange sang recyclable plastic bottles agud mapalapnag ang proper waste disposal kag recycling samtang ginapabilin nga limpyo ang aton siyudad," said Mayor Raisa Treñas.

But the project goes beyond providing internet access.

The initiative is designed to encourage environmental responsibility by giving value to recyclable waste. Instead of ending up in trash bins or landfills, plastic bottles become a resource that promotes both connectivity and sustainability.

According to Mayor Raisa Treñas, the project supports the city's campaign on proper waste management and segregation by encouraging residents to separate recyclable materials from residual, biodegradable, and non-biodegradable waste.

The ECO-NNECT machine demonstrates how technology can be used to address environmental challenges while benefiting the community. Every bottle deposited not only provides free internet but also contributes to a cleaner, greener, and more environmentally conscious Iloilo City.

At Iloilo City Hall, a simple plastic bottle is no longer just waste—it has become a gateway to connectivity and a symbol of sustainable innovation.
