π³πΏ NEW ZEALAND RANKED THE 2ND MOST PEACEFUL COUNTRY IN THE WORLD IN 2026 π
According to the 2026 Global Peace Index (GPI) by the Institute for Economics & Peace, New Zealand has been ranked the 2nd most peaceful country in the world, behind only Iceland.
This is something many of us can appreciate, especially those who have chosen New Zealand as a place to build a future, raise families, and pursue opportunities.
What makes this ranking interesting is that the Global Peace Index doesnβt measure only crime.
The GPI evaluates countries across 23 indicators, including:
β
Internal safety and security
β
Violent crime rates
β
Political stability
β
Military expenditure
β
International conflicts
β
Incarceration rates
β
Terrorism impact
This means the ranking reflects the overall peace and stability of a nation, not just whether people feel safe walking down the street.
New Zealand performs strongly because of its:
πΏ Political stability
πΏ Low level of militarisation
πΏ Strong democratic institutions
πΏ Geographic isolation from many global conflicts
πΏ Low risk of international tensions
πΏ High levels of social cohesion and safety
While no country is perfect and we all see challenges in our communities, it is worth remembering that New Zealand continues to be recognised globally as one of the safest, most stable, and most peaceful places in the world.
As migrants, many of us came here seeking a better quality of life, opportunities for our children, and a secure future. Rankings like this remind us why New Zealand remains one of the most desirable places to call home. β€οΈπ³πΏ
