Time travel is real—if you know which flight to book.

Cathay Pacific Flight CX880 departed Hong Kong at 12:30 AM on January 1, 2026. Passengers had just celebrated the New Year.

Then they boarded a plane and did it all over again.

The flight landed in Los Angeles at 8:55 PM on December 31, 2025. They left 2026 and arrived in 2025.

The flight took about 12 and a half hours. But because of the 16-hour time difference between Hong Kong and LA, plus crossing the International Date Line, passengers traveled backwards in time. They landed more than three hours before midnight struck in LA.

Two countdowns. Two celebrations.

This happens every year on New Year's Eve. ANA flies Tokyo to LA, departing January 1 and landing December 31. Cathay Pacific runs similar routes to San Francisco and Vancouver.

The most extreme example? Samoa Airways flights between Samoa and American Samoa. The islands are only 75 miles apart but sit on different sides of the International Date Line. You can hop between December 31 and January 1 multiple times in a single day.

The International Date Line runs along the 180-degree longitude in the Pacific. Cross it heading east, you subtract a day. Head west, you add one.
