Russiaโ€™s most popular holiday is just around the corner. Can you guess which one is it? Itโ€™s the New Year (ะะพะฒั‹ะน ะ“ะพะด)! Thatโ€™s right, in Russia the New Year beats Christmas in its importance. The majority of Russians celebrate the New Yearโ€™s day with the rest of the world on the 1st of January. New Year is a holiday supreme and is celebrated for at least two weeks.
โ €
Russian Orthodox Christmas is celebrated on January, 7. And it's usually an intimate celebration in the house with family members only.
โ €
Russians welcome the New Year by saying Every city will have its own festivities, concerts and other events. The streets will be decorated with trees and lights. Itโ€™s truly an experience and probably one of the best times to visit Russia.

Because New Yearโ€™s is celebrated earlier than CHRISTMAS (Orthodox Christmas is on January, 7) gifts are exchanged on the 31st of December. In Russia ๐——๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐— ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐˜‡ (ะ”ะตะด ะœะพั€ะพะท) is delivering the gifts to children. He is carrying them in a large sack on his back and he is wearing ๐˜ƒ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ธ๐—ถ (ะฒะฐะปะตะฝะบะธ), traditional boots made out of wool. Ded Moroz doesnโ€™t live on the North Pole like his counterpart Santa Clause, he lives in the town of Veliky Ustyug in the Vologda Oblast. Snegurochka on the other hand lives in Kostroma, around 600 kilometres away from Ded Moroz. He doesnโ€™t rely on reindeers to fly him around but instead he takes matters in his own hands and simply walks and skies a lot or drives his open sleigh which is carried by three horses which is called ๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ถ๐—ธ๐—ฎ (ั‚ั€ะพะนะบะฐ). It is a New Yearโ€™s tradition to place two figures of them under the New Yearโ€™s tree.

You can't see a Russian New Year celebration without Olivier salad. It's on every single table that night. And today I'm sharing with you how I cook it here in the Philippines, using ingredients you can easily buy โค๏ธ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญ
๐Ÿ”น6 big potatoes ๐Ÿฅ”
๐Ÿ”น1 carrot๐Ÿฅ•
๐Ÿ”น300g frozen green peas
๐Ÿ”น6 hard boiled eggs ๐Ÿฅš
๐Ÿ”นKosher dill whole pickles "Vlasic"
๐Ÿ”นJapanese mayo "Kewpie"
๐Ÿ”นpepper roast chicken "Chooks to go"
๐Ÿ”น1 onion ๐Ÿง…
๐Ÿ”นFresh dill w**d
Boil potatoes and carrot, then pill it off. Also boil green peas ( I prefer to buy frozen ones, because it supposed to be soft and sweet in salad, didn't find a good one in a can).
Cut all ingredients by small cubes, mix with mayo and chopped dill. Serve chilled ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿป

Food is a very important aspect when celebrating the New Year in Russia. Tables will break under the huge amount of amazing and delicious dishes. The celebrations are unthinkable without the traditional salads like ๐—ข๐—น๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ and ๐—ฆ๐—ต๐˜‚๐—ฏ๐—ฎ. The Olivier salad is a mix of potatoes and other vegetables, mayonnaise and meat. Shuba on the other hand is a combination of surprising ingredients like herring and beets shredded, smeared with mayonnaise and layered like a cake.
โ €
Other popular dishes are pickled vegetables, meat and potatoes, chocolate candies which are of course joined by drinking champagne or vodka.
โ €
In addition, mandarins are a necessity as Russians strongly associate the fragrance with the New Yearโ€™s celebrations. It is believed that a table with a great variety of different dishes symbolises prosperity and well-being for the coming year. Along with eating and decorating the tree watching special holiday programmes and old moviea on the television is another part of the celebrations.
